This page is designed to assist you in determining the quality of the display on your computer, the speed of your internet connection and the capabilities of your browser software. The page is setup to fit the standard 640 wide by 480 high, 256 color display. You should be able to see the entire width of the screen on your system if your display meets these basic requirements. The descriptions describe what you should be seeing, if what you see is not the same as the description, it should help you determine if your computer or software is configured correctly. If your download speed is not within the defined range for your modem speed you may have a problem. The Internet can get congested and downloads can become very slow. The best first step is to try the download several times at different hours of the day over several days. If you consistently have slow downloads you probably have a problem with your modem, phone line, your ISP service (Internet Service Provider), etc. |

| Horizontal Test Scale | |||||||||||||||
| The scale above is 6 inches long or more precisely it is "432" dots or pixels wide, at 72 dpi (dots per inch). "72 dpi" is roughly the average number of dots per inch that a typical display will show. If your monitor is in reasonable adjustment you should be able to place a plastic ruler against your screen and measure the line. Horizontal size is usually a user adjustment. Some variation may occur if you are using a multi-sync monitor. This type of monitor allows a user to select higher dpi settings. This will result in the measurement on the display to be smaller than "1" inch. Also note if the first and last inches are the same length, another adjustment called horizontal linearity affects this measurement (generally adjusted by a technician on many monitors). | |||||||||||||||
| Vertical Test Scale | |||||||||||||||

The scale below is 6 inches tall or more precisely it is "432" dots or pixels tall, at 72 dpi (dots per inch). If your monitor is in reasonable adjustment you should be able to place a plastic ruler against your screen and measure the height of the line. Vertical size is usually a user adjustment. Also note if the top and bottom inches are the same length, another adjustment called vertical linearity affects this measurement (generally adjusted by a technician on many monitors). Between the 4th and 5th inch marks on the left side of the scale are 32 horizontal lines, if you have a reasonable quality display in reasonable adjustment you should see 32 lines. Between the 2d and 3d inch marks on the scale is a small square. It is composed of alternating black and white pixels. If this looks "dark gray" on your display you have an average display. If you can see the dots you have a display with "good" resolution. |

| The web uses a standard palette of 216 colors. With a "good" monitor that is in proper adjustment you should be able to see a difference in "almost" all the squares. They should be "pure" un-dithered colors, i.e. no different color pixels (dots). | |||||||||||||||
